I will say this right now before you read any further. You should see this movie for the entertainment value alone. Should you watch it for a coherent plot and a well though out kick off for the new Justice League and DC Cinematic Universe? Ehh...
I actually did enjoy some things with this film. It's garnered a lot of negative reviews and attention which is deserved to an extent. The part of the movie that stuck out most to me was how visually impressive it was. Everything from the effects of the superpowers to the costuming of Batman and (SPOILER) Wonder Woman was also well done. Zach Snyder did a fantastic job in keeping with the overall design of these DC superheroes. I loved finally seeing these costumes in action during the multiple fight scenes. This is what most comic fans have been waiting for visually at least.
I also want to give praise to Ben Affleck as Batman. Many people thought he was going to be awful and not worth their time as Batman. I can honestly say that BatFleck is best Batman. I still enjoy Bale's performance for the most part but his incessant growling made it sort of annoying. I like BatFleck because his Batman is a worn-out and tired man. He's clearly been through a lot and is more prone to handing criminals with a more violent hand than normal. I also enjoyed seeing him act with Superman and Wonder Woman as well. His way of dominating a scene through brooding and intelligence was awesome. BatFleck also kicked ass during the fight scenes! This is a Batman unafraid of severely injuring his foes before turning them in. This is summed up with his habit of branding his foes. BatFleck is the best part about the movie in my opinion.
I wanna make this short and sweet in regards to plot. I enjoy plot but holy bad writing Batman! I get that this is the pre-team-up team-up film for DC but there is SO MUCH happening here. We have the first part of the film dealing with the consequences of having Superman around and what he means to overall global security. Then we have Lex Luthor wanting to pit our heroes against each other. We also have Bruce Wayne stealing kryptonite and files from Lex who he then shows to Wonder Woman. These files are all video clips of the other League members. Yes....we get our first inkling of these members .....in the form of an e-mail. Anyway we also have the fight that happens and also Wonder Woman gets involved and oh wait Dooms...day? I guess? This film is just too busy plot wise. I get they need to put a lot here because they have no set up films prior but wow tone it down and dole it out in other films.
While I enjoyed Wonder Woman in the film we don't see nearly enough of her to give any kind of rating. She will be awesome in her own film but here she comes in, says a few things, disappears, comes back to fight Doomsday and then leaves? I want to see more of her but we'll have to wait until that next film right? Uggh....
My primary issue with this movie has to do with how Snyder and DC have no idea how to put together a connected film universe. Look at Marvel, that spandex covered elephant in the room. They did things right by setting up their characters in separate and focused films that gave their audience time to get to know them. This is why Avengers works so damn well as a team-up movie because everyone feels like a team and important. We know who they are and why they're involved with the overall plot. With DC I don't get that feeling. I know that there's more films coming to detail these characters but this movie is already sort of a team up but has so much going on I left feeling confused rather than excited. This is not good because every Marvel film has left me salivating for the next one coming up.
It's like DC is trying to do the opposite of everything Marvel is doing right now. Hey! Is Marvel setting things up before making a larger team-up film and connected universe? Let's do huge and confusing things first with random set up plot points not many will get until the later single character films! Also let's make everything much darker and grittier because Marvel is more humorous and exciting! Yeah that'll get em! No, not it won't Snyder and DC....
Altogether this film is sort of a beautiful mess in a way. It's entertaining to watch but actually understanding what's going on is so difficult. Look at something like Captain America Civil War. From what I gather from trailers the film looks to be darker yes but also retains the fun and excitement of previous Marvel films. We also know most of the primary cast going into this film unlike BVS. BVS is not an awful movie but it's so full of plot lines for future way-off plot-lines that it hurts the film overall. I give this film a 7/10 overall. Here's to Suicide Squad and the next few DC films to be better plot wise.
