He's Baaack! DBZ Resurrection F brings back one of the franchise's most terrifying and strong villains ever!
-Spoiler Alert!-
I've been a fan of the DragonBall franchise ever since it premiered on Toonami back in the 90's. I remember running home everyday from school just watch the new episode on at 5 p.m. every weekday. It was my first exposure to anime as a whole and it changed me for the better. The show actually taught a lot of life lessons such how one can always improve themselves and fight for those they care about. I also remember being completely shaken by the appearance of Frieza. In my opinion he's the best villain in the entire series. He was a menace to an entire galaxy and it took Goku reaching an entire new level of legendary power to defeat him. The new film brings back this character for his own revenge on his enemies.
The film begins with a scene that I thought was some sort of weird animated short to play beforehand. It ends up being a personal Hell for Frieza who is trapped in a cocoon as tiny animals sing and dance around him. This scene had me laughing hysterically as I did for quite a few moments in the film. After this it's revealed that Frieza's space army has survived under the command of Sorbet, a lowly general who seeks out the Dragon Balls to revive him. Shenron warns against this as Frieza was cut to pieces and blasted the last time he was on Earth by Trunks.
Sorbet refuses to listen and has the eternal dragon revive his master anyway. Once he's been fully rejuvenated through new technology Frieza realizes that Goku has become much stronger since they last met. He vows to train as he has never had to before a day in his life. I liked hearing this tidbit as it explains how Frieza has never been challenged in his privileged life before. He decides to go through with the training and by doing so attains the golden form seen in the previews and posters.
A new character by the name of Jaco the Space Patrolman hears of this and races to Earth to warn Bulma and the Z fighters. Bulma gathers who she can which amounts to Piccolo, Gohan, Master Roshi, Tien and Krillin. It was a nostalgic moment to see the Z fighters gather together as Frieza and his men approached their planet. They work together to fight off the soldiers and also buy time for Goku and Vegeta to make it back to Earth. The two saiyans are currently with Beerus and Whis from the last film Battle of the Gods. They wished to be trained by Whis as he is the one who trained the God of Destruction Beerus himself.
This is inter-cut with scenes of the Z fighters taking on Frieza's soldiers. It was such a nostalgic trip to my childhood to see these characters fighting to keep the Earth safe yet again. Multiple Kamehameha waves are used as are some other classic techniques. I loved seeing Jaco join in on the fight as well. He's a new character but actually doesn't come off as annoying or pointless. He's useful in a fight and adds to the film overall.
We are then treated to some scenes of their training as they finally get the message about Frieza. Vegeta and Goku teleport to Earth and Goku takes the first turn fighting his old nemesis Frieza. I will say I had chills seeing these two titans fight. Frieza instantly goes to his final form he's known for and Goku stays at his base power level to fight at first. This surprised me as I quickly realized how much stronger he'd become since we last saw him in the last film. The fight goes on for a while before Frieza pulls out his new Golden form. Goku also reaches a new form as well. It's known in Japan as Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan but uh....let's just call it Super Saiyan God Omega to give it a better name here. Basically Goku gains a cool looking blue aura and matching hair. This new form allows him stand toe to toe with Frieza as the continue their fight.
Eventually Goku is subdued by some trickery on Frieza's part but not before he and Vegeta realize their foe's weakness. They surmise that Frieza trained to gain this form and sped off for revenge He did this before learning how to regulate his new form and utilize it to the best of his ability. This scares Frieza as he blasts away at Vegeta who has also attained the new blue-haired form. This was another great scene because fans get to finally see Vegeta get some revenge for his fallen home world and people. He's grown into a more heroic character as the series has progressed but has never lost his Saiyan pride.
Frieza through a last ditch effort blows up the planet and our heroes miraculously find a way to revert things so that Goku can take out his foe for good. I loved seeing this because it's mentioned by Whis that he lets his guard down too much during battle. Seeing him quickly make the decision to destroy Frieza for good was both surprising and refreshing at the same time.
I loved this film for the most part. Seeing these characters come back after so long in the same film was a true spectacle to see. The last film mostly sidelined the characters in lieu of Goku and Beerus having their showdown. Here they make an impact and help out. I will say I like Battle of Gods more than this film however. This film is a very safe DBZ film that uses the Goku saves the day solution to the main problem. Battle of Gods subverted this by including Beerus and the way in which he worked mentally and emotionally as a character. This film is an absolute blast for true fans but some may feel as though it was a little too safe. That being said this film made feel like a 5 year old all over again seeing Goku fight Frieza yet again.
The humor in the film was another strength. Multiple jokes come at the expense of characters present and not present (hint hint Yamcha). The animation is also top notch here and seeing the film in theaters was a treat. It should be known that both films will be used for story lines in the new DragonBall Super series currently airing in Japan. This is a must see for fans but go in to have fun rather than expecting have a better film than Battle of the Gods. DragonBall Z Resurrection F gets an 8/10. Funimation, please bring the new series to America!
